Warner Bros. Discovery will be keeping Discovery+ as a standalone streaming offering, as it prepares to launch the yet-to-be-named combined product of Discovery+ and HBO Max.
According to a Wednesday report in the Wall Street Journal, “Instead of combining HBO Max and Discovery+ in their entirety, the new platform will feature HBO Max content and most Discovery+ content, with Discovery+ remaining available as a stand-alone option, some of the people said.”
Per the WSJ’s sources “the decision to keep Discovery+ is part of an effort to avoid risking losing a significant chunk of the app’s 20 million subscribers who might not to want to pay the higher price to access that content.”
For reference, ad-free HBO Max costs $15.99 a month, while it’s ad-supported version runs at $9.99. Discovery+ ad-free is set at $6.99 and with ads is $4.99. Discovery+ without ads costs $6.99 a month and the ad-supported version costs $4.99. Warner Bros. Discovery has indicated that the upcoming unified streamer will cost subscribers more than HBO Max currently does.
Well no other info has been given in public domain by the company for it's future plan for new combined streaming service but we will discuss about it's Impact in Indian Marker & Possibly thing could happen further with Whole HBO Max & Discovery+ Thing.
Personal Reporting:
There's no lie that Indian market seeking entry of HBO Max not because we are in need of most streaming service but in fact Indian market is already rushy market for streaming services this so much of competition already being there.
The fact also to be considered that a one a brothers Discovery is actually a broke company as they are selling of many of the their assets to keep Business running so it's less likely for the company to launch an high cost operating streaming service in the highly competitive market.
Many people wanted Discovery + standalone because it's comparatively cheap and that's apply on India too if they merge into a same company it will be costly for consumers to consume content of streaming service for which they might not be paying for SBR in need of documentary is kind of thing for which Discovery + is a better option so from here one up brothers Discovery could keep Discovery plus as a cheap alternative to the newly combined streaming service.
The newly launched streaming service by Warner Bros. Discovery will also feature content of Discovery+ as to validate high prices for HBO Content. Because Discovery Plus is profit making streaming service that low operating costs so why to mess up those profits for the sake of already failing streaming service.
To be honest Discovery company is playing safe game for the long run here keeping Discovery Plus is a good idea but if we talk about Indian market they should simply license their dubbing rights to the platforms like Disney plus hotstar or Prime video for the sake of the consumers.
